Protest Continues: OAU Students Demand A Response.
Vehicular movement restricted by students on Ife-Ibadan Express Road, Nigeria.
The students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria raise their voices again against the ongoing standstill and indecision of the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The bustling Ife-Ibadan highway was blocked as early as 7am by students who were led in protest.
On Friday, the 13th of May, 2022, the highway around Oduduwa University was closed off causing a gridlock inside and outside of Ile-Ife, Nigeria. By 12 noon, the students extended the restrictions to Gbingban, holding off motorists travelling towards Ife, Ilesa and Akure. The Ipetomodu road and other adjoining routes were also blocked.
Eruobami Ayobami, Chairman of the Nigeria Association of University Students (NAUS) said that the protests will continue daily until there's a resolution between the Federal Government and the Academic Union.
The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi mentioned the need for mediation of respectable traditional rulers to find a solution.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Alli Ibrahim, he stated that the protest could pose a threat to not just academic excellence, but also the economic and political stability of the nation.
